About This Site

The Grilling BBQ is a one-person site about the gear that actually earns a place on a backyard patio. Everything here is written after real use on a 22 inch charcoal kettle, a three burner propane gas grill and a mid size pellet smoker, through Michigan summers and Michigan winters. We cover thermometers and temperature control, chimney starters and fuel, hardwood pellets, grill covers and weather protection, and cleaning tools. The focus is durability and honest trade-offs rather than spec sheets, and we say plainly when the cheaper option is good enough.

Grilling Safety

Grilling involves live fire, high heat and, with charcoal and pellets, carbon monoxide. Never burn charcoal or pellets indoors, in a garage, in a tent, on a covered porch or in any enclosed or partly enclosed space. Carbon monoxide has no smell and it kills. Keep any grill well clear of siding, railings, eaves, fences and overhanging branches, and never leave a lit grill unattended, especially with children or pets nearby.

A charcoal chimney starter gets hot enough to cause serious burns and stays dangerously hot long after the coals are dumped. Handle it with a dry, heat rated glove, set it down only on concrete, stone or bare soil, and never on a deck board, a plastic table or grass. Never use gasoline, and never add lighter fluid to coals that are already lit.

Grease is the usual cause of a grill fire. Clean the grease trap and the bottom of the cookbox regularly, keep a lid or a Class B or ABC extinguisher within reach, and never throw water on a grease fire. For gas, check the hose and connections for leaks with soapy water at the start of each season and any time you swap a tank, store propane cylinders upright and outdoors, and never store a spare under the grill or inside the house.

Wire bristle grill brushes can shed bristles that stick to the grate and end up swallowed, which has caused serious internal injuries. Inspect any wire brush before every use, replace it at the first sign of wear, and consider a bristle free tool instead. Whatever you use, wipe the grate before food touches it.

Cook food to a safe internal temperature measured with a thermometer, not by color or by time. Keep raw meat separate from cooked, never reuse a marinade or a plate that held raw meat, and refrigerate leftovers promptly. Cold weather adds its own risks, since ice underfoot, stiff hands and a rushed cook are how people get burned. Nothing on this site is professional safety advice, and you are responsible for following the instructions that came with your own equipment.
